"Thump, thump, thump thump"The knock on the door, although it hadn't been particularly loud sounded aggressive and jarred a disoriented Bianca from sleep. She had fallen asleep on her couch watching tv, she squinted her eyes to focus on the time on the cable box 3:41 am. Gathering wits she sprang to her feet in a panic. "Who would be knocking on my door at nearly four o'clock in the morning." She paced the living room considering what she should do next. Certainly not answer, nothing good could come of that, should she call the police, pretend she didn't hear it and ignore it. She scanned the room, the lights were on, blinds were closed there was no window by the door to see in and her apartment being on the second floor insured no one could look in through any of the exterior windows and see that she was moving.
"Thump, thump, thump, thump" this time louder and slower. Bianca rushed to the kitchen and searched for a weapon. She had a peephole but was frightened to go look through it fearing whomever was on the other side of that door would see her head blocking the light from the otherside, or otherwise indicate her presence in the apartment in any way.
"Thump thump" louder still more deliberate, someone wanted her to wake up and open the door. Bianca stood shaking, wishing she had met her neighbors and exchanged numbers. Calling the police was no option, not when she hadn't even looked through the peephole, she was going to have to look. She clutched the steak knife she had drawn from her drawer in front of her and causiously approached the door, more than anything in the world she wanted to avoid that door. Her mind was racing, a rationalization of who could be there unavailable. The knocking had stopped, Bianca froze careful not to make even a creak.
Suddenly her mind raced to checking the mail that afternoon. Had she locked the door before she turned on the television and sat on the couch. She looked at the deadbolt. "Oh my god!!!" She screamed in her head, no, no she hadn't, how could she have been so stupid. Slowly she began back towards the deadbolt one hand outstretched reaching for it, steak knife lifted by her head in the other hand ready to thrust.
Her entire body was trembling, thank God that the knocking had stopped, maybe her visitor had given up, maybe they had just been at the wrong apartment. She was reciting a prayer for protection over and over in her head gaining confidence that whomever had been knocking was gone with every passing moment of silence. She reached the door and carefully put her hand on the deadbolt, she didn't want to alert anyone who may be standing outside, unaware of her unlocked door that she was aware of them by locking it and making noise, but it had to be locked she had no choice. She ducked her head beneath the peephole so as to not disturb what ever light may or may not be shining through it. Bianca took one last terrified breath before she would begin twisting the lock. Before she could begin the door flew open slamming into her ducked head with great force the strong hand of a man grabbed her knife thrusting arm as she fell out of consciousness and onto the floor.
